The WSRT is an "aperture synthesis interferometer", using a linear array of 14 antennas. Some of the antennas are fixed while others are moveable along rails. The WSRT can be used for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations by combining it with other telescopes in the European VLBI network.
