The Rio-Antirio Bridge
bmeyer2 (08/22/2008) The Rio-Antirio bridge ("Charilaos Trikoupis") is a cable-stayed bridge across the Gulf of Corinth. It holds the world’s longest cable-stayed suspended deck: 2,880 meters. It was officially opened during the 2004 Summer Olympics -- the torch runners were the first to cross the entire length. Design and construction were full of engineering feats, due to deep water, loose sediment, and plate tectonics. For more information, see the Wikipedia entry: |
