Pollepel Island & Bannerman's Castle
bmeyer2 (04/05/2008) Pollopel Island is in the Hudson River, north of New York City. Bannerman's Castle was built in 1900 by Francis Bannerman VI, the owner of a massive surplus operation. He used the larger structure as munitions storage and lived in the smaller structure. Shortly after Bannerman's death in 1918, a subset of the munitions exploded in a secondary building, destroying a portion of the area. The island was eventually bought by the state who gave tours until a devastating fire in 1969.
