The Mamayev Kurgan Memorial commemorates the August 1942 to February 1943 Battle of Stalingrad, where the Soviets defeated the Axis forces in what is described as the bloodiest battle in WWII (if not in all of history).  According to Wikipedia, the memorial was the tallest free-standing sculpture in the world when it was created in 1967.
