Kingsbury Ordinance Plant: Factories and Bunkers
bmeyer2 (01/07/2007) The Kingsbury Ordinance Plant (KOP) was one of the major producers of shells and mortars during WWII. These are some of the factories.
The bottom building is 3 stories tall. You can see emergency slides coming out of the top floors, on the south end of the building, that were to be used in the event of fire or other explosion emergencies. See page 3 of the below website. The north building is another factory. The small, west building was a sort of "breakroom" used by employees, housing washrooms, restrooms, and a cafeteria. The basement was a heavily cemented bunker. The building sits on a man-made hill. Zoom in to see the slits cut into the hill, forming an entrance into the bunker. KOP information: http://shawnbrown.com/basement/kingsbury_ordinance_plant/kop00_intro.html Pictures of the adjacent "breakroom" building: http://community.livejournal.com/abandonedplaces/1183874.html bmeyer2 (01/07/2007) The surrounding, several square-mile area contains numerous abandoned factories, most of which have the employee building/bunker across the street. Eddie (08/10/2010) My Dad worked at the plant during WWII, and we lived in Kingsford Heights. He was a pipefitter for the facility. Too bad his is deceased, he could tell us exactly what these little things are. I agree with some of the other comments, ie., they appear to be pipe hangers, and I think I can see some Victaulic couplings attached to the pipe that is coming thru the ceiling. It would appear that at one time there was some type of piping manifold in place here, possibly a sanitary drainage system. We will NEVER know. |
