Hickman Crater (Discovered With Google Earth)
bmeyer2 (04/04/2008) The Hickman Crater is a meteorite impact crater that's nearly 260 meters wide and somewhere between 10,000 and 100,000 years old. The site is just north of Newman, Western Australia. Most interestingly, it was "accidentally" discovered in July 2007 by Arthur Hickman, a geoligist with the Geological Survey of Western Australia, through the use of Google Earth. Don (10/02/2009) I wonder how many other things are just waiting to be discovered? I bet thousands of people are scouring Google earth right now looking :) Lawrie (10/04/2009) The Hickman Crater is a newly-discovered probable meteorite impact crater, 35 kilometres north of Newman, Western Australia in the Ophthalmia Range. It was discovered by Arthur Hickman, a Government Geologist with the Geological Survey of Western Australia, in July 2007. The discovery was made by chance while browsing Google Earth. About 260 metres wide and 30 metres deep, the crater is thought to be between 10,000 and 100,000 years old. Source Wikipedia |
