Baikonur Cosmodrome is the oldest and largest operational space launch facility in the world. It was originally constructed in 1955 as a Soviet long-range missle site and later expanded for space. The Russian Space program continues to use the site.

Notable flights from Baikonur include (cited from Wikipedia):

  • The first ICBM.
  • Sputnik 1, the first satellite.
  • Yuri Gagarin, the first man in an orbital flight.
  • Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space.

See the Wikipedia article for more information, as well as a list of launchpads: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baikonur_Cosmodrome
