Avebury is the site of a massive Neolithic henge/stone circle monument.  It's over 5000 years older, predating Stonehenge (which is 20 miles south).  It consists of 2 rings of stones and an outer ditch/dyke.  It originally contained many more stones than what is seen here -- many were removed for stone materials or farming space before the site was protected.
