Alcatraz Island
shafty (09/30/2009) Alcatraz also known as 'The Rock' is 22 acres and reaches 121 feet above sea level. Apart from rainwater collectors it has no supply of fresh water. Various animals including mice, slugs and salamanders, are believed to have originally arrived on Alcatraz by swimming across the bay. At a height of 166ft above the water with a lens manufactured in France and costing over $15,000 to build, The lighthouse on Alcatraz was finished in 1854 and was the West Coast’s first. Two years later, the island’s foghorn was built. In foggy weather, it’s 1,000 pound bell was struck with 30 pound mechanical hammer every ten seconds. After the 1906 earthquake, civilian prisoners were transferred to the island until the city’s jails could be rebuilt. There were 14 attempts by 36 prisoners over 29 years to escape from Alcatraz. But no one ever successfully escaped. Rog (10/01/2009) Didnt Clint Eastwood escape from here? I remember sneaking in to watch escape from alcatraz when i was about 11 and the movie was rated 15 or something |
