Google Maps & Google Earth Sightseeing FAQ

Who maintains the content on Satellite Sights?

You do! Satellite Sights is strictly a community-driven satellite image sightseeing project: all images and information are posted and moderated by users. Users also have the ability to edit pre-existing posts, but we reserve the right the moderate these requests. Further, Satellite Sights reserves the right to remove or "clean" posts that contain fraudulent information or SPAM. Comments and descriptions are owned by whoever posted them and we are not responsible for their content.

Please note that by posting satellite images, comments, descriptions, or information about yourself, you grant Satellite Sights the right to display it on the site. Also note that most information on this site is submitted by users and is unverified -- do not assume everything is fact.

Does it cost anything to use or participate on Satellite Sights?

Absolutely not! Satellite Sights is financed solely by advertising. In order to keep the site free, we sincerely appreciate users visiting our sponsors!

What online satellite imaging tools do you support?

Currently, we support:

  • Google Earth
  • Google Maps
  • Google Street View
  • Microsoft Live Virtual Earth

We are currently working to support Yahoo! Maps and TerraServer as well. If there's a popular demand, NASA's World Wind application may come into the mix -- stay tuned!

What information is needed to post a satellite image?

You only need to provide a title that summarizes the image, the latitude and longitude (in degrees) of the image (see next question for instructions for this step), as well as placing it within our pre-defined categories. The location details (country, city, etc) are automatically generated from the latitude and longitude. Also, although this step is optional, feel free to research and describe the image in detail.

How do I find a satellite image's latitude or longitude when I find something interesting on a satellite image?

In Google Earth, make sure that Tools -> Options -> Show Lat/Long is set to Decimal Degrees. Then, as you move your mouse within the image window, the latitude and longitude appear on the bottom of the screen.

When using Google Maps, click "Link to this page" and copy the given URL. On the Post a New Site page, this URL can be directly pasted in to update the satellite image. Alternatively, find the "&ll=" within the URL and use the proceeding coordinates as the initial latitude and longitude.

Are there limitations as to what types of satellite images and locations I can post?

Nope! Feel free to post ANYTHING you find interesting or note-worthy. However, remember that we reserve the right to delete or moderate posts containing fraudulent information or SPAM.

I found a post that was temporary and is no longer available or a post with SPAM, scams etc. What should I do?

Kindly click the "Report this post." link in the post in order to submit it to us. We'll take care of it.

What internet browser requirements need to be met in order for Satellite Sights to work properly?

We take pride in being compatible with most browsers due to XHTML and CSS coding compliant with current W3C standards, as well as relying mostly on server-side scripting. However, your browser MUST be Javascript enabled in order to view a location through our embedded Google Maps feeds. Unfortunately, we have noticed that older versions of the Safari browser do not play well with Google Maps or Javascript in general...

Is my personal information safe?

Satellite Sights will NEVER distribute any of your personal or contact information to any third-party for any reason. Usernames and passwords are MD5 encrypted.

How can I contact Satellite Sights with questions, comments, or concerns?

Feel free to contact us at any time, using the Contact Us form.
