The Second-Longest Pier In The World…

Filed under: Featured Satellite Images — admin @ 12:34 pm

For a long time, Southend Pier’s measurement of a whopping 2.158km made it widely recognised as the largest pier in the world. Despite the expansion of a working pier in Progreso (Mexico) to a huge 6.5km, Southend (England) can still be proud of boasting the longest pleasure pier in the world, an attraction which brings in the tourists, as well as putting the town on the map.

Despite overcoming several fires and external threats to its existence throughout the years, Southend Pier has always withstanded the pressure, and been rebuilt where needed. It is seen as so long, that a private train service is in place to shuttle people back and forth, but there is plenty of room for people to walk the distant trek, either to get excercise, or just to avoid parting with a little money that would have been the train fare!

Once at the end, whichever method you take to get there, a [newly refurbished due to fires in 2005] ‘mini-village’ of shops and attractions awaits, with the return journey arriving at a museum of the pier’s rich history. The level of attractions makes Southend Pier one of the most recognisable places in its region.
