When the FIFA World Cup was held in South Africa, it was only fitting that the Final of this great sporting event would be held in Johannesburg, which is nicknamed ‘The City of Gold’.
The reason for this nickname is due to places such as this: the nearby Witwatersrand, an area which holds the honour of being the source of 40% of all the gold ever mined from planet Earth.
The area sparked a famous gold rush in the 19th century, and Rand Reef, the waters where much of the gold was first found, lends its name to the South African national currency (the rand). With the area also boasting a botanical garden and waterfall, tourists making their way back from the World Cup may want a glimpse of this historic location before they leave, as it must be considered one of the most valuable areas in the world.
