Molossia: A Ridiculous Republic…

Filed under: Featured Satellite Images — admin @ 12:45 pm

Molossia - President Kevin Baugh 1The Republic of Molossia, ‘founded’ in 1977 and claiming land 22 years on, is one of many self-proclaimed (and uncrecognized by anyone else) ‘micronations’ seen around the world.

The micronation Molossia, located in Nevada, USA, is a home-based project for ‘President’ Kevin Baugh, who considers his house, shed, and 1-acre garden a separate territory from the US, and as seen by the picture, seems to take his ‘dictatorship’ very seriously indeed, and even gets his wife, children and pets involved.

Creating a string of building projects in his property, Baugh has even gone as far as creating a website, customs office, tourist board (around 10 annual visitors), and official ‘facts’, such as a national currency, food, and sport, amongst other strange projects. Officially, though, Baugh is a US citizen, and has to pay his taxes like everyone else, but in Molossia, this inconvenience is known as ‘foreign aid’. Whatever next for this non-existent nation?

  1. Greetings.

Why “ridiculous”? Because we have declared our own nation on our property and choose not to be boring schulbs like most Americans, swilling beer and talking about football? We choose instead to be imaginative and creative and to think outside the box – as well as to lampoon the conventions of government and nations. Perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea, but we have fun with it. If imagination and creativity are a subject of ridicule, then the world is a sadder place that I already thought it to be.

  2. Thank you for your reply, but we only mean ‘ridiculous’ in the way that Molossia will not be recognised by the US as a serious proposition, and that the concept of trying to gain independence for this type of project is not a realistic one.

We appreciate and admire the way you have carried your project for so many years, and if you are truthful in saying that it is a bit of harmless fun, then all the better, as more people around the world should make an effort to persue their dreams like you have.

You are right in saying that some people do not understand the Molossia idea, but that would be their own opinion, and provided you do not force it on them, it will just be seen as what it should be – a harmless project that you enjoy doing.
