Microsoft Put Bing Into BlackBerry

Filed under: Latest News, Microsoft Virtual Earth — admin @ 11:42 am

blackberry bingMicrosoft CEO Steve Ballmer was present at a recent BlackBerry World press conference to announce that Microsoft-owned Bing has become the new default search (Bing Search) and mapping (Bing Maps) provider BlackBerry’s brand-new line of smartphones.

This will be a move to challenge Google’s dominance in the smartphone arena, with the new arrangement set to first appear on the upcoming ‘BlackBerry Bold 9900′, and the much-anticipated ‘BlackBerry OS 7′.

Ballmer said of Microsoft’s deal: “Effective today Bing will become the preferred search and maps application for BlackBerry. This goes way beyond a search box, it’s about finding real tools to help people get things done.”

An additional feature is that the ‘Bing’ app will be available to use straight away without needing to unlock the device, with web searches also featuring a ‘link ranking system’ based on social networking sites. ‘Bing for BlackBerry’ is also to be providing a selection of location-based services in conjunction with its mapping service, even allowing users to ‘look inside’ a building (presumably buildings such as shopping centres) featured on the map.

With Bing taking one of the first steps in dethroning Google’s dominance as a default search provider for non-exclusive smartphones, will the trend continue, or will the web giant up their game again?

Filed under: Google Earth, Microsoft Virtual Earth, Street View — admin @ 4:15 pm

If you have ever seen a satellite image using Google Earth or a similar applications or website then you know just how magnificent they can look. I always remember seeing my own home as viewed by a satellite in orbit. It was magnificent. First you see our great blue planet, next i typed in my zipcode and watch the earth zoom into my country. Then it looked closer and closer until i could see the roof of my home. you can even see the neighbours trampoline in the backyard, woods, landmarks, nature reserves and more. It was amazing stuff.

SatelliteimagesAnother great thing about viewing satellite images is that you get to see real photographs from anyplace in the world, The Great Pyramid, Mount Vesuvius, canyons formed when dinosaurs roamed the world, you name it. Your also able to save and share that great satellite view with friends and family. How about adding some more personal sights into your favorites such as your first house, or other local landmarks.

Another thing you can do once you have found your image is to view photographs of the satellite image or see a birds eye view perspective.

The only downside that can happen, is your computer may not be powerful enough to handle the application or show the 3D graphics. But if your pc is quick enough you have so much to look at.

Manmade Objects
Its easy to waste unlimited time on Google Earth zooming in and out of all the earths big man made landmarks. It has turned into a major popular time-killers for pc users today. Watching the Great Wall of China from the point of view of an orbiting satellite, as an example, can justify its size. Simply the fact you can see it from space and covers a good portion of the Earth.

Natural Sights
You can also enjoy browsing the web for aerial images of earths natural sights. You can see many in the US alone. Yellowstone National Park, the huge gorge made by the Rio Grande, and the snow caps of California’s Sierra Nevada are all astounding views, especially when shot from low flying survey planes, which give clearer images and different sights.

Google Street View
This is a great feature of online digital mapping technology nowadays is the capability to zoom in to get a street view of most major cities on Earth. I’m talking of Google Maps street view feature, which lets you to visit virtually any city on the map and have a virtual visit around it. The pictures used in streetview mode are shot from hundreds of car-mounted cameras throughout the earth that take pictures every day to keep the streetview option as up to date as feasible. If you spend enough time searching, you will see some entertaining scenes. From a car wreck to a man who needed a toilet break.

You will get so much enjoyment watching the satellite images from Yahoo, Google and Bing including the fantastic street views, although Google Maps likely has the most extensive selection of worldwide pictures and images. So stop reading this and get looking down on the earth at the amazing sights available.
