A key event on the road to the annual Eurovision Song Contest was held yesterday, after details on the Europe-wide singing competition were announced in 2012 host city Baku (Azerbaijan).
The city has the honour of hosting the contest due to Azerbaijan’s victory last year in Dusseldorf (Germany) through duet pair Ell & Nikki, with the event being mainly organised through national public broadcaster iTV, and set to be held between 22-26 May.
The event yesterday was considered as an ‘opening show’ to May’s contest, with decisions being announced on the official logo, the semi-final allocations for participants, and perhaps most importantly, the venue where it is all going to take place in 4 month’s time.
In a decision announced by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU, the organisation that founded and are responsible for the event), it was revealed that the entries from 43 countries will be performing at the new ‘Baku Crystal Hall’ on the city’s seafront.
The 23,000-capacity arena will be completed at the end of March at a cost of 6 million m (Azerbaijani Manat), and will have been constructed in the space of just 8 months.
While the venue will be permitted its full capacity for other events in the future (having been built as ‘multi-purpose’), organisers of Eurovision anticipate a capacity crowd of a reduced 16,000 for the competition.
EBU ‘Eurovision Song Contest Executive Supervisor’ Jon Ola Sand said of the news: “We are excited to hold the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in a brand new, state-of-the-art concert hall. Now that we have the assurance that the construction will be ready in time, we can look really forward to the contest.”
With the rest of Europe ready to descend on Baku for a week of musical and broadcasting festivities, will the preparations in the city run smoothly?

A recent survey undertaken by the Mercer Group has unveiled the order in which 221 cities around the world have been ranked in the 2011 version of the organisation’s annual ‘Quality of Living’ list, which determines the best cities to live in the world based on factors such as crime levels, public transport, city facilities, well-being, and financial security, amongst others.
Top of the list for the 6th year in a row is Vienna (Austria), with the 2nd and 3rd spots claimed by Zurich (Switzerland) and Auckland (New Zealand).
The method of the survey sees all cities rated in points on a number of criteria, being ranked against (47th-placed) New York City (USA) on a base score of 100 points. Other well-known names lower on the list included London (England) at 38, and Glasgow (Scotland) in 56th. Bottom of the pile amongst the 221 featured cities was Baghdad (Iraq).
Other sub-lists were also created, with Luxembourg City (Luxembourg) topping the safety standards rankings, followed by a number of names featuring regularly near the summit of Mercer’s lists
Mercer representative Milan Taylor said of how better-known places can fall down these lists: “Within [England], London rates below its counterparts mainly due to higher crime levels – something that is commonplace amongst many of the larger European cities.”
Below you can see featured images from this website based on the cities they come from in the top 10, doubling as a quick overview of the main official list from Mercer:
1) Millennium Tower, Vienna (Austria)
2) FIFA Headquarters, Zurich (Switzerland)
3) Harbour Bridge, Auckland (New Zealand)
4) Strange Design in Crop Field, Munich (Germany)
5) Landtag Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dusseldorf (Germany)
6) Rooftop Postage Stamp, Vancouver (Canada)
7) Extreme Air Traffic Jam, Frankfurt (Germany)
8 ) Jet d’Eau, Geneva (Switzerland)
9) Little Mermaid Statue, Copenhagen (Denmark)
10) Old City, Bern (Switzerland)

If you have the money, then a way to leave some sort of your own personal mark on planet Earth in whatever form is an experience that most would take up in a heartbeat, but how many would have the ego to leave their name imprinted in bold writing.
Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan (nicknamed The Rainbow Sheikh) is part of the ruling family of the city of Abu Dhabi (UAE), with personal inherited ownership of the relatively barren Futaisi Island area. 63-year-old Hamad (a reported owner of over 200 cars) decided to fill the void by digging a hole, with workers creating the foundation of a waterway in the image of his name facing to the south, meaning that when Google Maps users look at Futaisi Island, they will see a giant upside-down ‘HAMAD’ linking land and sea.
With his family having an estimated a £14b at their disposal, they are one of the richest families in the world, meaning that funding for this project, like many others in the UAE’s major cities, is far from a problem. Currently ‘H’ and ‘A’ have been filled in the construction, with M partway through being filled. When will the name become fully blue (all the letters are connected to allow water in), and what will it eventually be used for? Right now, it seems that only ‘HAMAD’ has the answer…

Following today’s announcement that al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden has been killed by US Forces in Abbottabad (Pakistan), users of Google Maps have wasted no time in providing an update to the site suggesting the building that was used as his hideout, in nearby town Kakul.
A pinpoint for ‘Osama bin Laden’s Compound’ now appears in the north of Pakistan, where the infidel was killed in a raid a few days ago. The location is probably not the exact place of bin Laden’s death, but the walled house in the centre of a busy town is nevertheless a far cry from the network of Middle Eastern caves that he had for so long been thought of as hiding in.
Masses of patriotic crowds gathered at various landmarks in the US to celebrate the successful raid just minutes after President Barack Obama made an official announcement, and as news spread of the kill, Google Maps and Google Places users posted ‘reviews’ of the hideout. Most of these comments were made to poke fun at the fact that the terrorist threat is dead, and at the time of writing, ‘Osama bin Laden’s Compound’ has 35 reviews and a 4-star rating. Comments have included suggestions that the place has ‘just gone on the market, to a simple and loud ‘OSAMA IS DEAD! USA! USA!’.
With the rest of the world also reportedly delighted at the death of the man who is said to have planned the 9/11 attacks, will the threat of al-Qaeda now diminish?

A Google Earth user claims to have found the legendary ‘lost city of Atlantis’ submerged in the Atlantic Ocean.
The sight of the image depicts the outline of a rectangle at a similar size to the nation of Wales, with the area most likely at the bed of the sea, with experts saying that this particular area of the Atlantic is around 3.5 miles below the surface. A vast series of gridlines crossing eachother in the way of a major city is what seems to be the main feature of the image, surrounded by a perfectly shaped boundary, all of which is said to be too organised and high in quantity to be a naturally-caused coincidence.
The possibility of this long-clamored discovery has excited geophysicists, oceanographers, theorists, historians, and mythology fans alike, as the area, located at 620 miles past the west coast of Africa, with the area in question known as the Madeira Abyssal Plane, found at an equal distance between the Canary Islands (Spain) and the Madeira Isles (Portugal) (said to be a hotly-touted place as to where the city is located by Ancient Greeks, with that group lead by legendary philosopher Plato) will most likely prepare for some high-intensity searching to try and see the ancient city in its submerged flesh.
Plato said that Atlantis was an much-advanced island civilization that was sunk by earthquakes and floods around the year 9,700BC – now almost 12,000 years ago.
The ‘grid’ was discovered by aeronautical engineer Bernie Bamford (from Chester (England)) on Google Ocean, a Google Earth add-on that combines satellite images and marine surveys. 38-year-old Bernie said of his find: “It looks like an aerial map of Milton Keynes. It must be man-made.”
Dr Charles Orser, who is a curator of historical archaeology at the New York State University (USA) and a leading authority on the topic of Atlantis announced that the story was “fascinating”. He said of the discovery: “The site is one of the most prominent places for the proposed location of Atlantis, as described by Plato. Even if it turns out to be geographical, this definitely deserves a closer look.”
The legend of Atlantis has been an exciting prospect and a coveted theory amongst scholars for centuries, and the idea of a submerged city has been the topic of many movies and TV shows/episodes over the years.
Although Google had claimed that the ‘blank spots’ between the lines were still a mystery as, a spokeswoman for Google explained how the rest of the site got discovered: “Bathymetric (or sea floor terrain) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the sea floor. The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data. The fact that there are blank spots between each of these lines is a sign of how little we really know about the world’s oceans.”
The claim of ‘Atlantis’ can be seen here.

Trains are seen as a reliable but limited source of transportation. While they are useful for a fast journey between two designated locations and avoiding some of the stresses involved with using the roads, train stations are not usually the most interesting of sights.
